Yesterday, President Ranil Wickremesinghe sent congratulations to his recently elected Indian counterpart, Droupadi Murmu.
“Your selection to this key duty in one of the greatest democracies is tribute to the faith and confidence the Government and the People have placed in your ability and political acumen,” President Wickremesinghe said in a letter to the Indian President.
He stated that there have been warm and long-standing ties between India and Sri Lanka that have developed over millennia of interactions between people. He added, “I am pleased that these tried and true ties of friendship between the two countries continue to be strengthened through ever-growing cooperation and support in many spheres of strategic interests that we share.”
President Wickremesinghe continued, “Your leadership brings fresh impetus to our combined efforts to foster and expand the warm connections we share and I look forward to working closely with you towards this purpose.” On July 20, 2022, Ranil Wickremesinghe was chosen as the eighth president of Sri Lanka, while on July 21, 2022, Droupadi Murmu was chosen as the fifteenth president of India.
