The Supreme Court has granted leave to proceed with an appeal petition seeking a ruling that Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala is disqualified from holding a seat in Parliament.
The order was issued by the Supreme Court after considering an appeal petition filed by former Administrative Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Renuka Perera, said Ada Derana reporter.
The petition seeks a declaration that Ananda Wijepala, having been elected as a Member of Parliament, is disqualified from holding his parliamentary seat as he currently also serves as the President’s Chief of Staff, which, according to the petition, is a position that renders him ineligible to remain a Member of Parliament under the provisions of the Constitution.
