The Ministry of Agriculture says that the Department of Agricultural Development has started providing parachute discs worth 490 million rupees to the farmers for free in order to cultivate 8461 acres this ‘Maha Kannaya’ season.
Parachute method is a new technique that can be used to increase the yield of rice cultivation.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the use of egg rice can be reduced by 50% with this method compared to sowing rice in the normal way.
Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said that this method is beneficial to the farmers because they can use a minimum amount of fertilizer, do not spend extra money for weed control, and do not have to apply pesticides for weed control.
The Minister of Agriculture mentioned that these parachute discs can be used continuously for 10 years for 20 seasons (Kanna) and 400 discs are needed per acre.
The minister also mentioned that under this program of providing parachute discs, 3.2 million discs have been planned to be given free of charge to the farmers for this ‘Maha Kannaya’.
