The Motor Vehicles Ordinance will be changed to govern electric three-wheelers so that they may be registered, according to Transport, Highways, and Mass Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Bandula Gunawardane.
At yesterday’s (9) Government Information Department news conference to announce Cabinet decisions, he made this statement.
According to the Minister, the current Motor Vehicle Ordinance Act permits the registration of diesel and gasoline cars but excludes the registration of electric vehicles.
A formal circular will be issued in this regard, and programs to import electric cars, motorcycles, and tricycles into Sri Lanka will be put into place. Additionally, Sri Lankans who send money to Sri Lanka through a commercial bank will have the option to import electric vehicles for their family’s needs. He said that it would be able to lower the nation’s gasoline import costs as well.
