The Family Health Bureau of the Ministry of Health says that 15,763 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition have been identified throughout the island this year.
According to a survey conducted by the agency in conjunction with the National Nutrition Month held in June, the highest number of children were reported from the Colombo Municipal Council area.
The Family Health Bureau points out that the percentage of underweight children, which was 15.3% last year, has increased to 17.1% this year.
