The no-confidence motion submitted by the opposition against Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara is scheduled to be taken up for debate in Parliament today (24).
The Department of Communications of Parliament stated that the decision was made by the Committee on Parliamentary Business, which met last Wednesday.
The opposition submitted the no-confidence motion against Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara to Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne on July 21.
The motion was filed over the minister’s alleged failure to fulfill his responsibility and accountability regarding the safety of inmates and prison officers during the incident at Negombo Prison.
Accordingly, the period from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. has been allocated for parliamentary business under Standing Orders 22(1) to 22(6).
The period from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. has been reserved for questions requiring oral answers, while the time from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. has been allocated for questions under Standing Order 27(2).
Thereafter, the no-confidence motion against Minister of Justice, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, will be debated from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., as decided by the Committee on Parliamentary Business.
Accordingly, the Private Members’ Motions that were originally scheduled for debate today will instead be taken up on a future date.
