Customs officers detained a passenger on a plane and a female employee of the duty-free shop at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) who attempted to leave the airport with a shipment of gold cookies valued Rs. 205 million.
The shipment, which weighed nine kilograms and 500 grams, was confiscated by Customs last morning at the arrivals port by representatives of the Narcotic Control Division.
The accused person is a Nittambuwa-area air traveler aged 39. At 8.35 in the morning, he landed at the BIA on Emirates aircraft EK-650 from Dubai. The female suspect is also a 38-year-old Seeduwa resident who worked at the BIA duty-free retail center. While attempting to flee the BIA with 80 gold biscuits in his baggage and the airport employee in her handbag, the suspect was apprehended. Further inquiries are being made about this while the two are being held by airport customs personnel.
