The Department of Meteorology says that the deep pressure depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal will further develop into a cyclone and move away from the island near the northern coast of Sri Lanka in the next 12 hours. According to that, the sky will remain heavy with clouds in the northern, north-central and eastern provinces, said the department.
Occasional rain or thundershowers will occur over Northern and North-Central provinces and Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts. Heavy rains of more than 75 mm may also occur in some areas.
Sabaragamuwa province and Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts may experience some rains, while Uva province and Ampara and Hambantota districts may experience scattered showers or thunderstorms after 1.00 pm.
The department stated that rain may occur in the morning in the Western Province and Galle and Matara districts. In the Northern, North Central, North Western and Southern provinces and Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts, strong winds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour can be expected from time to time.
The Department of Meteorology requests the people to take necessary measures to minimize the dangers caused by temporary strong winds and lightning that may occur with thunderstorms.
