The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva says that an independent investigation covering all aspects of the attack should be conducted with international support. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Walker Turk has mentioned this while presenting his annual report on Sri Lanka.
He points out that although the government has proposed a new truth-seeking mechanism, truth-seeking alone is not enough and everyone must be committed to providing an adequate tool to punish the guilty. There must be political will to implement them. He has pointed out that the Sri Lankan regime’s expected transformation has not occurred due to public protests, and because of this, the provision of solutions to long-standing challenges is further delayed.
He has further mentioned that Sri Lanka is continuously acting without accountability, and recently human rights violations and misuse of power can be seen in the country.
