SLAF launches special investigation into incident at Kalpitiya Firing Range

The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has initiated a special investigation into an incident that occurred on 17 June during a bomb disposal exercise conducted at the Kalpitiya Firing Range.

In a statement, the Air Force said that while the exercise was in progress, three individuals entered the secured perimeter of the firing range without prior authorization or notification.

At the time, seven Air Force personnel on duty, together with an officer from the Police Special Task Force (STF), questioned the three individuals regarding their identities. During the inquiry, it was established that one of the individuals was a police officer, while the other two were civilians accompanying him.

According to the statement, a heated argument subsequently arose between the parties during the questioning process.

The Air Force emphasized that areas designated for bomb disposal exercises are declared restricted security zones and are strictly off-limits to the public. It further noted that the Air Force is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of all individuals within the area during such operations.

Accordingly, the Air Force stated that the necessary security measures had been implemented to safeguard individuals and prevent potentially hazardous situations.

Nevertheless, the Commander of the Air Force has appointed a special Court of Inquiry to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident and submit a report on its findings.
