Maize farmers in Ampara district are in dire straits due to the return of ‘Sena’ caterpillars and damage to the maize fields.
In Timbirigolla village of the Damana regional secretariat division and Bandaraduwa villages of the Uhana regional secretariat division, hay crops have been severely damaged by Sena Dalambuwa.
Farmers say that although they used some tactics to protect their crops from the army caterpillar, they did not get any results.
They say that 12500 hectares of maize have been cultivated in Ampara district and if this situation is not controlled, the crop will be destroyed soon.
“We have informed the farmers about the menace of caterpillars in the initial awareness meetings before planting maize. They have been informed about the remedies to be done” said Mr. KAKS Lakmal, Ampara Assistant Director, Department of Agriculture.
