Former parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake, who is currently in jail on a charge of contempt of court, is scheduled to appear for the first year final examination of the Bachelor of Arts in Youth Affairs and Community Development on the 4th of next month, the Commissioner-General of Prisons (Administration, Rehabilitation and Media spokesman) Chandana Ekanayaka said.
The former Member of Parliament is currently serving his sentence at the Welikada Prison.
After his imprisonment, he requested the prison authorities to provide him with the necessary facilities to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Youth Affairs and Community Development at the Open University.
Mr. Chandana Ekanayake stated that after the Commissioner General of Prisons gave the necessary approval, Mr. Ranjan Ramanayake was provided with the necessary facilities for his academic activities.
Accordingly, arrangements have been made to send Ranjan Ramanayake to the examination on the 4th under the special protection of the officers in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Prisons Department, he added.
