The newly appointed chairs of the parliamentary sectoral oversight committees would have equivalent authority to that of a cabinet minister, according to President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
They will consequently take part in Cabinet sessions as required.
The process of selecting the Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committees is presently under progress, and it has also been determined that a number of temporary committees are required.
The oversight committees and national assembly will be implemented in accordance with the president’s proposal to transform the whole parliament into a government. In addition to the members of parliament, the oversight committees will also include five youth representatives. Young people would take part in such Committees for the first time in Sri Lanka.
All political parties and organizations are represented by the National Assembly.
Following the ratification of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, this new system will be put into place. During the debates about the All-Party Government, the President asked the opposition parties to determine if they would systematically represent the committees in forming the government and, if not, if they would join it.
