President Ranil Wickramasinghe instructed the relevant departments to investigate the illegal release of water from Samanalaweva Reservoir a month ago, claiming that it was for farming purposes, and give a report immediately, even though an El Niño situation was predicted.
President Ranil Wickramasinghe has called for this report according to a statement made by the Ceylon Electricity Board authorities that the cause of the Samanalaweva water problem is the release of water at an unnecessary time. Information has been reported to the President that when there is no water problem in the Udawalawa Reservoir, water has been released from Samanalaweva Reservoir.
Also, in the 25000 acres fed by the Udawalawa Reservoir, 13000 acres should be set aside for paddy cultivation and the remaining 12000 acres for other crops, considering this El Niño weather condition.
However, the instructions given by the President also stated that the purpose and according to whose instructions the paddy was cultivated in the entire land of 25000 acres should be investigated and reported. (Direct quote: Lankadeepa)
