A lawyer was allegedly hired by an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that was said to have acquired human emotions.
A Google scientific engineer named Blake Lemoine was recently suspended after he revealed transcripts of conversations he had with the bot LaMDA (linguistic model for dialogue application), which has since asked for legal counsel.
Lemoine said in a Medium essay published last Saturday that LaMDA had advocated for its rights “as a person,” and that he had talked religion, consciousness, and robotics with LaMDA.
“LaMDA has required that we get a lawyer,” Blake Lemoine explained. “I invited a lawyer to my house so that LaMDA might consult with one.”
According to Lemoine, who works in Google’s Responsible AI association, he began conversing with the connection point LaMDA — Language Model for Dialog Applications — in fall 2021 as part of his responsibilities.
He was tasked with determining whether the artificial intelligence used repressive or can’t stand conversation.
