According to police, about 600 detainees have fled from the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Kandakadu, Welikanda.
SSP Nihal Thalduwa, a police spokesman, said a brawl erupted when a tense situation arose following the death of one person at the Kandakadu Centre.
He verified that 600 convicts fled following the altercation that happened last night.
According to SSP Thalduwa, the Army and Police have been dispatched to handle the situation and arrest the fugitive convicts.
