Galle pitch to test both Sri Lanka, New Zealand bowlers

Sri Lanka will take on New Zealand in the first of two Test matches at the Galle International Cricket Stadium today.

After their impressive 8-wicket win against England at the Oval, Sri Lanka is eager to carry that winning momentum into the New Zealand series, particularly with the advantage of playing in home conditions. New Zealand, led by fast bowler Tim Southee, poses a tough challenge, but Sri Lanka has devised fresh strategies to combat the Kiwis.

“We are aware of our strengths in our home conditions, and we are formulating plans accordingly. I am confident that our players will execute these plans effectively in the game. Following our successful performance in the last Test against England at the Oval, I have full confidence that our players can replicate the same level of performance in Galle,” said Head coach Jayasuriya.

Jayasuriya confirmed that Kamindu Mendis will continue in the middle order, rather than at number three. “After our last win, it’s tough to make changes, but for the balance of the team, we won’t play three pacemen. Milan Ratnayake did well on his debut, but at Galle, we have decided to include only two key pacemen, Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara and add a regular spinner.”

“We have Ramesh Mendis as the off-spinner, supported by part-timers Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis,” said Jayasuriya.

“We have made the decision to position Dinesh Chandimal as the number three batter, relieving him of his wicketkeeping duties, and appointing wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis as a lower middle-order batter (number 7),” he said.

“We’re aware that Rangana Herath is working with the New Zealand spinners, and he’s very familiar with Galle conditions. But our own spinners are well-equipped to handle this series,” added Jayasuriya.

New Zealand captain Tim Southee acknowledged the significance of this two-Test series, as it is part of the ICC Test Championship. “We’re currently ranked third in the ICC Test Championship, so every game is crucial. We expect a tough challenge from Sri Lanka, especially in their home conditions.”

Although New Zealand’s preparation was disrupted by the washout of their one-off Test against Afghanistan in India, Southee said the team had productive training sessions in Galle. “Galle is known for favoring spinners, but both our pacers and spinners are ready for the challenge. Having Rangana Herath, with his experience at Galle, working closely with our spinners will be a big advantage.”

Southee also praised former captain Kane Williamson’s role in the team, noting his ability to handle spin effectively. “Kane’s experience and skill against spin will be crucial in this series. We’re looking forward to a strong performance from him.”

“In previous tours, we had the expertise of Chaminda Vaas and Thilan Samaraweera as specialist coaches for Sri Lanka. This time, former New Zealand paceman Jacob Oram is serving as our fast bowling coach as we aim to put up a strong fight against Sri Lanka,” added Southee.

The second Test will start on September 26 at the same venue.
