The world-famous magazine ‘Asian Scientists’ has named the 100 most outstanding Asian scientists of this year 2023, and four Sri Lankans are included in it. As well a marine biologist, Asha de Vos, founder of ‘Oceanswell’, Dr Rohan Pethiagoda, Chaturanga Ranasinghe of the University of Colombo and Ashani Savinda Ranatunga of the University of Moratuwa are the four scientists from Sri Lanka included in the list.

Asha de Vos is a leader in blue whale research. She is the first Sri Lankan scientist to obtain a PhD in marine mammal research. Dr Rohan Pethiagoda won the 2022 Linnaean Medal in Zoology, the first Sri Lankan to receive the medal. His constant research, writing and advocacy for the conservation of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity have been recognized worldwide.

Chaturanga Ranasinghe is the recipient of the 7th Sheikh Fahmed Hiroshima – Asia Sports and Medicine Award 2022. The award is given every four years to a medical specialist in Asia for his contribution to sports medicine.

Ashani Savinda Ranatunga has been conferred with the ‘OWSD-Elswire Foundation Award 2022’ for converting industrial and agricultural waste into value-added products and using them as raw materials for eco-friendly construction and development projects. ‘Asian Scientists’ magazine evaluates the inventions of scientists in Asia, their achievements, and their service to science, and tells the world about their achievements.

Award-winning ‘Asian Scientists’ is affiliated with Singapore’s ‘Wild Type Media Group’ media network. (Direct translation quote: Lankadeepa)
