Scientists have been astonished by the identification of extremely unusual “walking sharks” in Papua New Guinea. The epaulette shark, also known as Hemiscyllium ocellatum, is distinct from other shark species in that it can traverse the ground. On May 3 of this year, the creature was seen along the island’s coast.
Forrest Galante, a scientist and conservationist, just contributed the rare film of this odd species for the upcoming Shark Week episode of Discovery Channel, “Island of the Walking Sharks.” In order to look into reports of a brand-new species of walking shark, he had traveled to the coral reefs of the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
