Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardena says that a fare revision should be made to maintain train fares one-third lower than the current bus fare. Speaking in Parliament today (24), the Minister stated that a policy decision has been taken in this regard.

The Minister mentioned that the total income of the Railway Department in 2021 is 2.6 billion, of which 2.3 billion has been spent on overtime payments and 7 billion on salaries, and due to this, there has been a loss of 10 billion rupees in the past years.

Accordingly, the Minister further mentioned that the Railway Department should be digitized to eliminate inefficiency and within another three months, it is hoped that ticket issuance, seat reservation etc. will be completely digitized.
