Recommending that the current President of the National Sports Council, Arjuna Ranatunga, be appointed as the President of the National Sports Council while he was working as an executive committee member of the Sinhala Sports Club (SSC), a subsidiary of Sri Lanka Cricket and that it is appropriate to look into the matter. Sudath Chandrasekara, the senior adviser of the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Roshan Ranasinghe, informed the Minister of Sports in writing yesterday (25th).

Under Section 4 (1) of the Sports Act No. 25 of 1973, the National Sports Council has been established to advise the Minister and Section 4 (3) of the said Act states that a member appointed to the Council shall, as long as he is a member of the National Sports Association of Sri Lanka or Mr. Sudath Chandrasekara has forwarded the relevant letter to the Minister stating that he should stop holding office in any other sports board or organization.

The letter states that National Sports Council President Arjuna Ranatunga has been elected as an executive committee member of the S.S.C in June 2021 and Arjuna Ranatunga has been appointed as the chairman of the sports council from August 10, 2022, by the minister.

Accordingly, Mr Chandrasekara said in the letter that Arjuna Ranatunga has violated the Sports Act by concealing the facts and holding the chairmanship of the National Sports Council and that his holding and acting as the chairman of the National Sports Council, which advises the Minister of Sports, is a serious offence and is not an ethical act. Taking these facts into account, the letter also emphasized that it is recommended that Arjuna Ranatunga look into the matter regarding the chairmanship of the National Sports Council. Copies of the letter have been forwarded to the Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and members of the National Sports Council. (Direct quote: Divaina)
