After the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, an emergency presidential election will be held to choose a new president, Ahmad Vahidi, who is serving as Iran’s interim president, explained by calling a press conference.
According to Iran’s constitution, an emergency presidential election must be held within 50 days if the incumbent president dies or is forced to step down. Accordingly, the election authorities had indicated that the presidential election should be held between May 30 and June 3.
However, after discussions between the election authorities and the Iranian Board of Trustees, it was decided to hold the presidential election on June 28, according to Iranian media. After that, Interim President Ahmad Wahidi informed the media that an emergency election would be held.
Ebrahim Raisi, Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdullahin and others died in a helicopter accident on the 19th. An investigation conducted by the Iranian army has revealed that it was an accident. All the decision-making in Iran is done by the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Board of Trustees of Iran carries out the selection of suitable candidates for the presidency of Iran. Supreme Leader Al Khamenei also appoints the members of this board of trustees. Candidates loyal to Supreme Leader Al Khamenei, nominated by Iran’s Trusteeship Council, will run for the presidential election. The President is elected by popular vote. (Press TV)
