The Chairman of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Alleviating the Impact of the Economic Crisis says that there are problems with how the Public Utilities Commission approved the increase in electricity rates.
According to that, its chairman, Member of Parliament Gamini Walegoda, stated that government officials belonging to the power sector had been called for this meeting, but the officials of the Public Utilities Commission did not attend and avoided the meeting.
The chairman of the committee stated that they have not done a correct technical evaluation or have a correct opinion regarding the amendment of the electricity bill and they have only approved the increase in the rates referred by the cabinet.
The chairman further stated that if VAT is added to fuel, the electricity bill should be increased in comparison to it.
