The government has decided to cut off the privileges given to former presidents outside of the Presidential Privileges Act. According to the Presidential Privileges Act, a former president is only entitled to a pension, a house, three vehicles, fuel and a private secretary. But in the past seasons, many privileges including water bills and electricity bill payments were included under the privileges of the former presidents.
The government has also been instructed to act according to the Presidential Privileges Act from a decision of a case filed before the Supreme Court questioning the privileges of former presidents.
Accordingly, a senior government spokesman said that from now on, when granting privileges to former presidents, those granted outside of the Presidential Privileges Act will have to be cut. (Lankadeepa)
