Violence has erupted in Papua New Guinea‘s capital, Port Moresby, over a pay cut. Foreign media reported that eight people lost their lives and 10 people were injured due to violence.
Rioters attacked cars, shops and buildings in the city. They broke into the supermarkets, causing damage and started looting the supermarkets. The salary cut has happened to the government employees. Salaries of public servants are said to have been cut by 50%.
The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, James Marape, has said that the government did not cut the salaries of public servants, and that the salary cut was due to an error in the computer system that processed the salaries.
