Vesak Full Moon Poya, also known as Vesak Day or Buddha Purnima, is one of the most significant holidays in Buddhism, celebrated by millions of Buddhists around the world. This auspicious day commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, who later became known as the Buddha.

The Vesak Full Moon Poya falls on the full moon day in the month of May, according to the lunar calendar. This year, Vesak Full Moon Poya is celebrated on May 05th, 2023. The day is observed as a public holiday in many countries, including Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Indonesia, among others.

Birth of the Buddha

According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal, over 2,500 years ago. The story goes that Queen Mahamaya, the Buddha’s mother, had a dream in which she saw a white elephant entering her womb. This was interpreted as a sign that she was going to give birth to a great spiritual leader.

The Buddha’s birth is celebrated on Vesak Full Moon Poya as a reminder of the potential for enlightenment and wisdom that exists within all beings. Buddhists around the world visit temples, light candles, and offer flowers and incense to pay homage to the Buddha and his teachings.

Enlightenment of the Buddha

The Buddha is said to have achieved enlightenment at the age of 35, after spending six years in meditation and asceticism. On the night of the full moon in May, he attained the state of Nirvana, or ultimate enlightenment, under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India.

The Buddha’s enlightenment is considered a pivotal moment in human history, as it marked the beginning of the Buddhist religion and the Buddha’s mission to share his teachings with the world. Buddhists celebrate the Buddha’s enlightenment on Vesak Full Moon Poya by practising meditation, chanting sutras, and performing acts of kindness and generosity.

Nirvana of the Buddha

The Buddha passed away at the age of 80, having spent the rest of his life teaching and spreading his message of peace and compassion. His passing is known as the Parinirvana, or the final Nirvana, and is celebrated by Buddhists on Vesak Full Moon Poya as a reminder of the impermanence of all things.

Buddhists commemorate the Buddha’s passing by offering alms to monks, performing acts of merit, and engaging in reflection on the Buddhist teachings. Vesak Full Moon Poya is a time for Buddhists to renew their commitment to the path of enlightenment and to honour the Buddha’s legacy of wisdom and compassion.

Conclusion

Vesak Full Moon Poya is a time for Buddhists to reflect on the life and teachings of the Buddha, and to cultivate compassion and wisdom in their own lives. Whether through meditation, acts of generosity, or reflection on the Buddhist teachings, Vesak Full Moon Poya is an opportunity to deepen one’s understanding of the path to enlightenment and to honour the legacy of the Buddha.
