A dispute has arisen between the two countries with the detention of a Russian plane at the Katunayake airport.
Russian officials have stated that they traveled to Sri Lanka on the assurance of a Sri Lankan leader that they would not detain aircraft belonging to Russian companies.
Russian officials also say it is problematic to detain the plane in such a setting.
The 191-passenger aircraft, which was scheduled to take off from Moscow, has been detained following an enjoining order issued by the Colombo Commercial High Court. The complaint was made by an Irish company.
Russian officials say the plane has flown to Sri Lanka seven times before.
