In 1886, a group of workers gathered in Chicago, America, and started a protest, demanding that all workers be given an 8-hour work shift. The country’s police attacked this protest that lasted for several days and many people were killed and others were arrested.
Later, in 1889, the first day of May, when this struggle started, was declared as World Labor Day by the International Labor Organization. Accordingly, today is the 137th International Labor Day.
