The first poll to appoint a speaker for the House of Representatives of the American Parliament (Congress) was held, but it was not possible to choose a suitable person for the position of speaker.

This is the first time in American history that the first round of voting failed to elect a speaker for the House of Representatives.

After the mid-term elections in November 2022, the majority of the House of Representatives will not be held by the Democrats of American President Joe Biden, but by the rivals, the Republicans. Accordingly, Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi will step down as speaker.

Republicans have nominated Kevin McCarthy to be the new speaker. McCarthy needs the support of not only Republicans, but Democrats as well to become a speaker.

However, in the first round of polling, Kevin McCarthy did not get the necessary support. Even his fellow Republicans disapproved of him.

McCarthy needed 218 votes to become a speaker. However, American media reported that he got only 203 votes. 19 Republicans voted against McCarthy. (Reuters)
