The Temple of the Tooth, known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, is a famous religious site located in Kandy, Sri Lanka, where it is believed that the tooth relic of Lord Buddha is housed. The tooth relic, considered one of the most sacred objects in Buddhism, is visited by thousands of devotees and tourists from all over the world, making the temple one of the most popular attractions in Sri Lanka.

History of the Temple of the Tooth

The temple’s history can be traced back to the 4th century AD, during the reign of King Kirthi Sri Meghavanna, when it was established. The tooth relic, originally kept in India, was brought to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamali and her husband, Prince Dantha. Anuradhapura, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka, housed the tooth relic for over a thousand years before it was transported to Kandy in the 16th century.

During the 17th century, King Wimaladharmasuriya I commissioned the construction of the temple, which was later completed. Throughout the years, the temple has undergone several renovations and additions. The temple complex encompasses various buildings, such as the main shrine, the Octagon, the Golden Canopy, and the New Temple.

The Architecture of the Temple of the Tooth

This is a fine example of traditional Sri Lankan architecture, where the main shrine is constructed on a raised platform and is surrounded by a moat. The entrance to the shrine is adorned with elaborate carvings and paintings. Intricate murals depicting the life of Lord Buddha and other significant events in Buddhist history adorn the walls of the shrine.

The Octagon, considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the temple complex, is a circular structure that houses the tooth relic. It is adorned with gold and precious gems. The Golden Canopy, a pavilion constructed to protect the Octagon from the elements, covers it.

In the 20th century, the New Temple, a modern building, was added to the temple complex. Within it, a museum displays various artifacts related to Buddhism and the history of the temple.

The Significance of the Temple of the Tooth

This site of pilgrimage holds great significance for Buddhists from all around the world. It is widely believed that the tooth relic possesses the power to bestow good fortune and prosperity upon its worshippers. Additionally, the temple stands as a symbol of Sri Lankan culture and heritage, evoking a sense of pride among the people of Sri Lanka.

As an important tourist attraction, the temple draws the attention of numerous visitors each year. Its serene and tranquil ambiance, complemented by the presence of exquisite gardens surrounding the temple complex, further enhances its allure.

Conclusion

The Temple of the Tooth holds immense significance for the people of Sri Lanka and Buddhists globally, making it a site of great religious importance. Its remarkable architecture, profound history, and cultural significance establish it as an essential destination for travelers visiting Sri Lanka.

When planning a visit to the Temple of the Tooth, it is essential to dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering the shrine, adhering to the customs and traditions of the temple. Furthermore, it is important to show respect by refraining from taking photographs inside the shrine.

In conclusion, the Temple of the Tooth stands as a sacred place of worship that has endured the test of time, providing hope and inspiration to countless individuals worldwide. Whether you are a devoted Buddhist or someone who appreciates the beauty of religious architecture, a visit to this iconic temple is certain to leave an indelible impression.
