The Sri Lankan cabinet has approved a proposal to waive tourist visa fees for visitors from up to 35 countries for a period of six months, starting from October 1, 2024.
This decision follows a detailed study conducted by a specialist committee appointed by the cabinet on April 25, 2024, to explore strategies used by other countries in issuing tourist visas without charges.
The committee analyzed the practices of eight countries that are competitive with Sri Lanka in the tourism sector and submitted their findings to the President. The President then presented the report to the cabinet of ministers.
Based on the committee’s recommendations, the cabinet has decided to implement the visa waiver program, allowing tourists from the selected countries to stay in Sri Lanka for up to 30 days without paying visa fees.
This initiative aims to boost tourism and attract more visitors to the island nation.
Foreign Minister Ali Sabry tweeted the following earlier in the day.
