At Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by 198 runs after they were bowled out for 76 in only 19.5 overs after scoring 274 in 49-3 overs to take the first match of the three-match series. The former world champions’ batting collapsed against the fast pace of 26-year-old right-armer Henry Shipley, who finished only his third ODI game with a career-best burst of 5 for 31 from 7 overs, leading to one of their lowest ODI totals—their lowest being 43 against South Africa. Only Angelo Matthews (18), Chamika Karunaratne (24), Lahiru Kumara (10 at the tail), and Angelo Matthews (18 in the lower order) were able to score in double figures out of the whole Lankan frontline.

Nuwanidu Fernando was run out for four, and Shipley bowled Pathum Nissanka for nine, causing the collapse. He also dismissed Kusal Mendis for a duck, caught by Blair Tickner, and Charith Asalanka for nine, caught behind, both by Latham. He then dismissed Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka for a duck, dismissing both batsmen in quick succession as Sri Lanka limped to 31 for 5 in 9.4 overs.

When New Zealand batted, they amassed a huge 274 runs despite missing players like Kane Williamson. Debutant Rachin Ravindra scored the most runs with 49, Darryl Mitchell scored 47, and Glenn Phillips scored 39.

Chamika Karunaratne of Sri Lanka collected 4 out of 43 runs. Shipley won Player of the Match, dealing a setback to Sri Lanka’s hopes of securing automatic qualification for the World Cup.

Main Scorecard:

New Zealand 274 (49.3 Overs) (Finn Allen 51, Rachin Ravindra 49, Darryl Mitchell 47, Glenn Phillips 39, Chad Bowes 14, Chamika Karunaratne 4/43, Kasun Rajitha 2/38, Lahiru Kumara 2/41, Dasun Shanaka 1/16, Dilshan Madushanka 1/58)

Sri Lanka 76 (19.5 Overs) (Chamika Karunaratne 24, Angelo Matthews 18, Lahiru Kumara 10, Henry Shipley 5/31, Darryl Mitchell 2/12, Blair Tickner 2/20)
