Mr. Sampath Liyanage, Secretary of the Union Of Post & Telecommunication Officers, said that all employees of the postal department started a 48-hour symbolic strike from midnight today (7) based on several issues including the transfer of the historically valuable Nuwara Eliya and Kandy post office buildings to the private sector.
He also mentioned that the strike action of Central Post Exchange employees started today (7) from 4 p.m. In addition, a protest movement organized by postal workers will be held on the 9th.
Mr Sampath Liyanage said that during the discussion on Nuwara Eliya City Development on April 4, the President had given instructions to hand over these buildings owned by the Postal Department to the private sector for a tourism project.
He further mentioned that it is a national crime to hand over such valuable buildings to the private sector.
