Pakistan Prime Minister acquitted of charges

A Pakistani court has acquitted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his two sons, Hamza and Suleman, of corruption and money laundering charges.

Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency had filed charges against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his two sons for laundering millions of US dollars. That is in 2020. At that time there was the Imran Khan administration. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s second son Suleman lives in Great Britain.

The Federal Investigation Agency of Pakistan indicted Shehbaz Sharif and Sons in November 2020, alleging that 16.3 billion rupees (about US$200 million) were laundered through 28 of their bank accounts. The Federal Investigation Agency of Pakistan also said that the accounts were maintained from 2008 to 2018.

Shehbaz Sharif held the position of Pakistan’s opposition leader while allegations of corruption and money laundering surfaced. Hamza Sharif was the former chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Shehbaz Sharif, who was working as the leader of the opposition, got the post of Prime Minister of Pakistan after Imran Khan was ousted from the post of Prime Minister by the vote of confidence brought by the opposition alliance in the last month of April.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza were acquitted of all charges by the special court in Lahore. Neither the Prime Minister nor the son appeared before the court at that time.

However, when the case was called on the 8th, the 70-year-old Prime Minister and 47-year-old Hamza appeared before the Lahore court. At that time, the Prime Minister and his son also tried to deny all the allegations. Shehbaz Sharif emphasized before the court that he has not cheated a single Pakistani rupee. Even when they appeared before the Lahore court, the Prime Minister and his two sons had already been granted bail. (NDTV)
