Athurugiriya police said that a field officer of the Labor Department arrested five employees working in a shop in the Panagoda area who demanded a bribe of 400,000 rupees from the businessman to run the shop without connecting it to the Provident Fund and received an advance of 50,000 rupees.
The police said that they will have to pay an amount of 11 lakh rupees to the provident fund for the five employees of the said shop and they have requested an amount of four lakh rupees for doing the necessary work to avoid the payment of that amount.
A 54-year-old man who is said to be a field officer of the Labor Department, a resident of Ranala area, Navagamuwa, has been arrested.
