The military rulers who seized power in the country say that they hope to prosecute the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, who was dismissed from office and arrested, on charges of treason.

Niger is a former French colony. Niger belongs to West Africa. The army seized the power of the country by arresting President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.

Bazoum, who heads the Niger Democratic-Socialist Party, is a seasoned politician. From 1995 to 1996, he also held the position of Foreign Minister. Bazoum’s presidency began on April 2, 2021.

He has the support of America, France and other Western countries. Bazoum is considered to be a person who played a very important role in the establishment of democracy in Niger.

Not only the United States and France but also the West African Economic Community have said that they will take measures to impose sanctions on the military rulers regarding the military coup. The Economic Community of West Africa is an alliance of West African countries. (Reuters)
