Soon, four volunteers will travel to “Mars.” On Monday, April 15, NASA declared that the next crew members for their simulated Mars mission at the Johnson Space Center in Houston had been chosen.
The four crew members will be imprisoned in a tiny room meant to mimic life on Mars for aspiring space travellers for forty-five days.
The Human Exploration Research Analog, or HERA, will be launched by NASA on May 10 and will carry the four volunteers, Jason Lee, Stephanie Navarro, Shareef Al Romaithi, and Piyumi Wijesekara. After that, they will live and work like astronauts until June 24.
In advance of upcoming trips to the red planet, NASA claims that the project will assist the organization in better understanding “how crew members adapt to isolation, confinement, and remote conditions.” The crew will do routine chores and scientific investigations in addition to simulating a stroll on the planet’s surface.
The space agency claims that HERA is a 640-square-foot habitat. It comprises a loft and two levels.
This is going to be HERA’s second crew. March 18 marked the end of the mission for the final crew. Later in the year, two further missions are planned. For the next trip, Brandon Kent and Jose Baca will act as backup crew members. (KXAN)
