The Ministry of Agriculture has approved strawberry cultivation on an export basis.
A project a group of local investors proposed to grow strawberries for export has been approved.
It was agreed to give one hectare of land belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture in Nuwara Eliya under the first phase of this new project. Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that depending on the project’s success, up to 10 hectares can be given for strawberry cultivation if needed.
Sri Lanka is ranked 57th among strawberry-exporting countries.
The Ministry says that if strawberries are cultivated using new technology, it is possible to earn 117,600 American dollars per year from one hectare.
Also, the ministry says that it is possible to get a harvest of 120,000 kg from one hectare and the amount invested to cultivate one hectare is 250 million rupees.
