Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has notified President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in writing about the party leaders’ decisions.
A special party leaders’ meeting was convened today to address the current national crisis.
The President has been informed of the following four key decisions that were agreed to by a majority of the party leaders:
- President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to resign immediately
- Parliament to be convened in seven days to appoint an acting president
- Appoint an interim all-party government under a new Prime Minister commanding majority in Parliament
- Call for elections within a short period of time and appoint a new government
The decisions were taken after the public stormed three state buildings, including the President’s official residence and office in Colombo, calling for the President and Prime Minister’s resignation.
