Legal action to be taken against unsafe crossings in Kandy

Strict legal action will be taken against pedestrians who cross main roads unlawfully without using designated pedestrian underpasses, Kandy Police has announced.

Authorities state that the failure to use the underpasses, which were constructed to reduce traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian safety in Kandy city, has become a serious concern.

Despite significant investment in building these facilities, some pedestrians continue to bypass them and cross roads dangerously, increasing the risk of road accidents and worsening traffic congestion, police stated.

Police further noted that strict action will be taken against anyone violating pedestrian crossing regulations, regardless of their status.

Special police units are to be deployed near pedestrian crossings and underpasses, and offenders will be subject to fines and other legal measures, Kandy Police added.
