The beautiful coastline surrounding the island is a vital element that directly impacts Sri Lanka’s economy, tourism industry and overall environmental balance. However, due to increasing human activities, the coastline is being severely polluted by the accumulation of waste. In response to this pressing environmental concern, a coastal cleaning initiative titled “A Cleaner Environment with the Army – A Cleaner Coastline for the Nation” is planned to be launched under the guidance of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, in collaboration with the Clean Sri Lanka Task Force.

Stretching approximately 1,340 kilometres, Sri Lanka’s coastline is renowned as one of the most beautiful place in the world and remains a major source of foreign exchange income for the country. Accordingly, this islandwide coastal cleaning programme will be conducted from 0800 hrs to 1200 hrs on 29 July 2025 under the Clean Sri Lanka programme, with the participation of the Sri Lanka Army and sister services, the Ministry of Environment, the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), public and private institutions, volunteer and civil organisations, environmental groups, and both local and foreign environmental enthusiasts.

Troops of Security Force Headquarters – Jaffna are tasked with cleaning the stretch of coastline from Vellamkulam to Chundikulam. Meanwhile, troops of Security Force Headquarters – Wanni will clean the areas from Mariddukoddai to Vellamkulam and from Chundikulam to Kokkilai. Troops of Security Force Headquarters – East will cover the stretch from Kokkilai to Kumana, and troops of Security Force Headquarters – Central are to clean the section from Kumana to Kudawella. In addition, troops of Security Force Headquarters – West are responsible for cleaning the area from Kudawella to Mariddukoddai.

The Sri Lanka Army invites all stakeholders to join this national initiative. Further details can be obtained by contacting 077-3902160 or 076-5536654.
