IS ARUTAS beach, which is covered by a white mantle of tiny pebbles with wonderful iridescent hues, is located on Sardinia’s west coast in the municipality of Cabras, a few kilometres from Oristano. It is a natural marvel, known as the “Pearl of the Sinis Peninsula” because of its lovely shoreline made up of very thin grains of quartz polished by the wind and sea that glisten in the sun to resemble “grains of rice.”
The “grains of rice” beach is lapped by a clear, crystalline sea and stretches over a swath of low Mediterranean scrub bounded by two rocky spurs. The seafloor is instantly deep, teeming with species and vibrant colours, making it a popular snorkelling site. Because of the mistral winds that blow during the winter, it is also an ideal location for wind and kite surfing. IS ARUTAS means The Caves in Sardinian, an old name that was most likely linked to the existence of several sandstone quarries that were originally present in the area.
The contrast between the blue of the water and the hues of the quartz grains on the beach ranges from white and pink to warm golden tones, producing something incredibly lovely and evocative. This tiny piece of heaven necessitates care and special attention to the surrounding marine and coastal ecosystem.
