Between May 31 and July 31, 22 gunshots resulted in the deaths of 20 people in the last 60 days. With the shootings, 22 incidents—including 8 fatalities—have occurred exclusively in the Colombo District.
Only in Western Province have 14 deaths occurred throughout this 60-day cycle, including 8 in Colombo, 4 in Gampaha, and 2 in Kalutara.
In the Southern Province, there have been six fatalities, with five occurring in the Galle area and one in the Hambantota district.
According to a police profile, criminal gang members living in India, France, and Dubai organised these killings.
The majority of the shooting occurrences are still under investigation by police, while some others are still open but without any clues.
The biggest question these instances arouse at this time is, how are these semi-automatic and automatic fire arms available in a country which has banned free carry ? And how is it possible with the customs and military fully monitoring the goods entering Sri Lanka?
