The IGP plainly failed in his duties on May 9 by failing to adequately safeguard the peaceful protesters at the Galle Face/Temple Trees and to follow the law, according to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL). It is suggested that the President order a probe into this subject in a two-page letter from the HRCSL.
The HRCSL further recommended the police chief to take the appropriate steps to guarantee that similar actions by the police chief do not recur in the future.
It further advised the President to launch a probe into the failure of all senior police officers, from the IGP downwards, who had been on service at the protesting sites in Colombo to give proper security to the protestors.
The HRCSL also stated that if victims can be identified, the Police should reward them.
