For the first time in history, an Advisory Council was appointed today (9th) under the patronage of the Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunnetti, to foster the development of the Event Management industry—a prominent sector among Sri Lanka’s newly identified industrial fields. This marks the first time the Ministry of Industry has appointed an advisory council specifically for a service sector.
The Event Management industry, recognized as a creative industry established in Sri Lanka for over 30 years, held a value of Rs. 60 billion as of 2025. It provides 30,000 direct jobs and 80,000 indirect employment opportunities, supporting over 400,000 families while showcasing Sri Lankan craftsmanship to the world. The government’s objective is to grow this industry to a value of Rs. 250 billion in the future.
Globally, this industry is growing at a rapid annual rate of 10%–14%, with a current valuation of USD 1.5 trillion.
The council consists of 25 members representing the public, private, and academic sectors. Mr. Saliya Weerasekara, President of the Event Management Association, was appointed as its Chairman.
The discussion focused on current industry challenges, future growth strategies, and the potential to transform Sri Lanka into a South Asian ‘Hub’ for events in integration with the tourism industry. Key topics discussed included:
- Issues in obtaining approvals for organizing events.
- The lack of accurate industry data.
- Maintaining creative rights and standards.
- Establishing and maintaining a National Event Calendar for events held in Sri Lanka.
- Development of domestic aviation facilities.
- The urgent need for a suitable international-standard venue near the capital for hosting international events.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Chathuranga Abeysinghe, Ministry Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara, Additional Secretary S.W.C. Jayamini, Director Geethani Dissanayake, other ministry officials, and leading entrepreneurs and creators from the Event Management sector.
