Looking back in the B.C. history of Sri Lanka, we had a very loyal to God devotional king in the north called Ravana (referred to as Ravana in the history), who had abducted a woman he liked and kept in captivity and promised to not touch her even with his finger until she gave permission. The most truthful king had to face death vigorously as he faced a war against the mighty King at that point, Rama of India, who had a band of monkeys led by his true disciple, Hanuman. The curse started at that point; the whole of Sri Lankan soil had a taste of blood from that incident, starting by the books of history…
Going back in the books of Mahavamsa, we have learnt that there had been many foreign takeovers and how our kings fought them in order to prevent them from stealing us. Battles have been won and lost. The only consistent thing throughout the pages of history is that blood is shed on our soil. We have been overjoyed with wining and sorrowing because of the losses, but we didn’t consider the blood shed on the soil as a result of that.
We had the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the British trying to rule us because of the spice range we had, and they succeeded for more than 200 years. Once again, the blood is shed, and lives have been sacrificed in order to regain freedom. From that moment, we received freedom. We didn’t get freedom as a man or woman from society nor from the family. Family burden and society have forced us to live the way they want and not the way we do. We have been working hard our whole lives just to fulfill the basic needs of human beings, such as a permanent residence, transport, and a healthy, happy life.
Amidst this chaos of running for our survival, we had 32 years of civil war… I do not want to take a side, but as we have heard of genocides, rapes, murders, and droughts, once again, the war is won by any means. After 2009, when we were gaining our strength just to run for our lives… The Greece men, genocides and terrorism were playing with our lives.
Now when we think our lives have settled for less than anything, we have had 2 years of COVID with thousands of deaths… The crisis has started its game of play. The crisis has already hit us and if you think it’s not going to hit you… Be prepared for the day you step out when you have cooked the last bit of rice on the counter.
Prepare yourself… Be vigilant… Open your eyes…
