A coordinated search operation conducted by the Navy and Police in Kurighghmpiddi and Sinnakudirippuwa, Kalpitiya on 01st September 2024 led to the apprehension of a suspect with 01kg of Kerala cannabis and a single cab. A search operation was conducted by SLNS Vijaya of the Northwestern Naval Command in collaboration with the Police Crime Division Puttalam. During the operation, naval and police personnel searched a cab in the Kurighghmpiddi area, discovering approximately 800g of Kerala cannabis prepared for sale. The Ceylon Private Bus Owners’ Association has said that bus fares will not be revised in response to the recent revision in fuel prices. Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne said that bus fares are determined by a specific price formula, and a reduction of Rs. 10 in fuel prices is insufficient to warrant a fare adjustment. Wijeratne further stated that a minimum reduction of Rs. 25 in fuel prices would be necessary to consider lowering bus fares.

A retired air force airwoman has been detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake after a live T-56 ammunition was discovered inside her handbag during a routine security check.
