Postal voting for Sri Lanka’s 2024 Presidential Election begins today, with over 700,000 state sector employees eligible to cast their ballots.The Election Commission has allocated September 4 to 6 for government and military personnel to vote.Today, postal voting will take place at district secretariats, election offices, and police stations across the country. Additional days, September 11 and 12, have been set aside for those unable to vote during the main period.

The Sri Lanka Police have issued a warning to vehicle owners against displaying political party campaign advertisements on their vehicles.According to Police Media Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General Nihal Thalduwa, it is illegal to display such ads, and vehicles found with them will be stopped and the ads removed.Thalduwa also noted that the removal of firmly attached stickers or posters could potentially damage the vehicle. He urged vehicle owners to voluntarily remove these advertisements to avoid police intervention.
The Foreshore Police launched an investigation after the driver of a container truck, who had been waiting in a queue at the Customs exit gate since yesterday, was found dead inside his vehicle this evening within the port premises.According to police, the driver, believed to be between 60 and 65 years old, was pronounced dead when being admitted to the National Hospital, Colombo. They suspect he may have died due to a cardiac arrest.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the implementation of the recommendations from the Presidential Expert Committee, chaired by Udaya R. Seneviratne and appointed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to investigate and address salary discrepancies in the government sector.
