A total of 39 candidates will contest the 2024 Presidential Election, the National Election Commission announced today. According to the Election Commission, 39 candidates handed in their nominations during the acceptance of nominations from 09.00 am to 11.00 am held today. The Indo-Sri Lanka Joint Field Military Exercise ‘Mitrashakti’ commenced with a parade at the Army Training School, Maduruoya on 14 August 2024.Major General Dinesh Udugama, the Commander of the 59 Infantry Division and the Director of the exercise, graced the ceremony as the chief guest. During the event, he officially declared the commencement of the military exercise and addressed the Sri Lankan and Indian troops participating in the exercise.The inaugural parade was commanded by Major Roshan Weerakkodi, the Commanding Officer of the 3 Gajaba Regiment. Major Ruwan Karunathilaka and Major Kuljith Poonav served as the second-in-command, representing the two countries.

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan has pledged his support for Opposition and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa in the 2024 Presidential Election.During a meeting with the SJB Leader, former cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan extended his support for the politician’s programme to build the nation.  Four suspects including a principal were arrested in connection with the rape of a 16- year- old girl by 22 schoolboys in Thanamalwila, Police said.The principal, a male teacher and two female teachers of the school where the girl was studying were arrested for concealing the incident without informing the police.Thanamalwila police earlier arrested 17 out of 22 schoolboys in connection with the incident.
