The Ministry of Public Security has requested advice from the Attorney General on the Supreme Court’s recent decision regarding the issuance of visas to tourists.
Public Security Ministry Secretary Viyani Gunathilaka confirmed that all necessary measures have been taken in accordance with the court’s ruling.
Gunathilaka stated that he has sought further clarification from the Attorney General on specific matters and that a special discussion is scheduled to take place soon.
The Attorney General’s Department indicated plans to file a motion with the Supreme Court to address certain issues that have arisen.
The Supreme Court recently issued an interim order halting the implementation of a decision by the Cabinet of Ministers to outsource e-Visa services to two foreign companies.
As a result, the Department of Immigration and Emigration announced that online visa issuance would be suspended from the night of the 2nd.
Tourists arriving in Sri Lanka will now only be able to obtain visas on arrival at the airport.
In a related development, the Ministry of Public Security has limited the number of passports issued daily to approximately 1,000.
Passports will only be issued to individuals who have reserved their date and time online.
